“Rebellion” tells the story of the last major battle between the Jacobites and the British, which took place at Culloden in 1746.
A Celtic Hymn expresses the patriotic pride of the many Scots who went to war for their homeland. At the head of the rebel Jacobites was Prince Charles. He tried to obtain as much support as possible from the Scots and claimed the Scottish and English thrones on behalf of his father (Louis XV of France).
The British government had also assembled its own army under the command of the Duke of Cumberland. He went after the Jacobites to defeat Charles in his battle for the throne. The two met in the region of Culloden. Charles' army consisted of 5,000 men, while the government army of the Duke consisted of 7,500.
The Jacobites were forced to retreat after a long battle, but the Duke showed no mercy. He had all the refugees he came across killed. Many innocent civilians who had nothing to do with the battle were also killed. Prince Charles managed to escape to Europe.
The “In Memoriam” commemorates these people and the measures the British took to prevent another uprising. All weapons were banned in Scotland. The bagpipe was declared a weapon and also banned. Even wearing a kilt led to a prison sentence.
The survivors returned home, defeated but still proud of their Scottish nationality.
